To be completely invisible in pain and sorrow. E tudo tudo bem. The challenge is: help people, help people, help people. Money is not the end, but a mere natural consequence that you give away. It keeps flowing. Coming and going.

<![CDATA[Bluebonnets and Brazilian music.]]>Thu, 19 Apr 2012 21:43:28 -0800http://yellowhouserecords.com/1/post/2012/04/bluebonnets-and-brazilian-music.htmlEverybody here in Central Texas loves Bluebonnets, and must take a picture in the fields with their family every Spring. Well, as a new Texan, living here in Austin since August of last year, I decided to join in the fun. With a little encouragement from my friends!
I also found my way back to performing 'Brazilian' music here in Austin. After many years focusing almost exclusively on my original music project in Seattle, heavily rock and pop influenced and sang mostly in English, I'm delighted to have a new project, Paula Maya & Bossa Nova Plus that focus specially on the music of the great Tom Jobim. After spending almost 4 months in Brazil last year, I found new love for the music that was so present in my life growing up in Rio. I know it will influence my songwriting as well. Not that I'm not proud of my last record 'The 12', which helped me get featured on Coast To Coast Emerging Artist.

How about you? Are Bluebonnets part of your family pics? Or perhaps a different flower? I'd love to know!

Well, hello my friends, and family!! Welcome new folks on this list! You haven't got an email from me in a long while. I've been thinking about you. Yes. Thinking about this letter I find myself writing. A lot has changed. In fact, everything. I feel I am closer to my true self than I've ever been. Thank God! Growing older does something for ya after all!

The last year was extremely challenging. After recording the basics for my new record 'The 12', and spending several thousand dollars, I had a serious problem with my producer, and was left with a skeleton of a project. Without getting in too much detail, I almost gave up finishing it, several times. Thanks to God, my good friends, luck and guts, I'm extremely proud that I finished it 5 stars style! A lot of amazing talent came to my rescue. You can check 'The 12' out at http://www.cdbaby.com/paulamaya3 Or at Itunes, Amazon... You'll find all these links on my official website: http://www.paulamaya.com

In October of last year I decided to move out of Seattle, WA, after 17 years living there. I wanted to do it for a while, and I found the excuse I needed to yank me out of that land, and everything that was familiar to me, including my friends I knew I would miss. I was really encouraged by a new vocal producer I was working with to move to the East Coast and be close to NY. I could stay with him for a while. He lives in N. Connecticut. Well, long story a little shorter, I moved out of the house I was living in Seattle, put my stuff in storage, and went on a WA, CA, TX month tour, ending in CT for Thanksgiving. Back in Seattle, I stayed with good friends until January, when I shipped my stuff to CT first thing after the new years eve festivities, and caught the plane into the deep freeze! Well, you can imagine this Brazilian, a Carioca (one born in Rio de Janeiro), who was tired of the cold and rain in Seattle, spending the coldest winter on record in CT!! Caught 35 negative. Ummmm... yeah. I don't think this is gonna work out! Stuck inside in Enfield, CT!

Finally March arrived, and I came to Austin TX for SXSW, the famous music conference, and for my birthday. I already loved Austin, and had thought about moving here. (After all, Houston TX was my first US home.) While down here I got word from CT that the place where I was staying flooded, with my stuff inside. Luckily I didn't loose too much. I went back, put the saved stuff in storage - now in CT - and came back to Austin.

And then: Brazil! My family wanted me to go back for a while. Who knows. Maybe now I could stay, and even live, in Rio! It sounded tempting. I bought a ticket to arrive in Rio for my sister Caró's birthday party on May 1st - I was to provide the entertainment! :) This time it would be a 10 months stay in Rio!! Since I had left, 18 years ago, I never stayed for even a whole month. But... fate had different plans for me. 15 days before taking off to Brazil I went to help my friend Lori with hospitality at the Old Settler's Bluegrass Music Festival. I was staying with her at the time. Who knew I'd meet a great guy at the festival, who happened to know my friend Lori for 25 years. Me and Robert felt such a strong connection that we decided to keep a long distance relationship. Well, needless to say, I didn't stay in Rio for 10 months! But I stayed for almost 4. And it was amazing! To go deeper in my family relationships, and friendships. And to get to know Rio a little better. My soul is rejoicing. I fell in love with Rio, perhaps for the 1st time in my life.

Now I'm back in Austin, TX. A place I love. Great music scene. I love to be able to go out anytime and, somewhere, I can catch great live music! At night, packed with great talent. And the Mexican, Tex-Mex food! Join both together, and you have hippie church at Maria Taco's every Sunday for brunch. And don't forget the barbecue, and fried chicken. Another great plus for me is that I live across the street from Lady Bird Lake, and walk around it daily.

I'm now with a new band, an Austin band. I still love my Seattle band, and hope to play with them when I'm in the Northwest. After all, it was over 12 years of playing together, and 4 records. I'm playing shows again, after a break of a few months, a time when I dug even deeper, soul searching work, and challenged everything in my life, including Music, which I've been doing non stop for over 30 years. Well, it looks like Music survived the severe internal scrutiny to reach the Truth. It's one of those things... I re-discovered that I must do it. It's almost like, I don't have a choice. The love is too strong, too intense. It must be the best way for me to reach other people's souls. And I'm very excited about Life, and Humanity. It's a journey!

In addition to my original music project, Paula Maya, I started a new one. 'Paula Maya & Bossa Nova Plus Project'. I have found new love for Bossa Nova, and especially the music of Antonio Carlos Jobim. It's funny. In all this time in the US I rarely played Brazilian music, except as a radio host in Seattle/Bellevue, where I co-hosted the Brazilian music radio show Raizes with Samia Panni, for 12 years on KBCS 91.3fm. The fact is, I hate to be put in a box, and I couldn't go along with people assuming that my group performed Bossa Nova because I was Brazilian. I always had my style, my vision, my message. Now, 18 years later, I see a completely different musical landscape out there, and the need to have rigidly defined musical boundaries has been proven to be only one approach, and not necessarily preferred by the public, who embraces what is good and musical, even if it's new, given a chance to listen. It's no wonder I'm surprised by how much I'm enjoying to re-discover the music of A.C.Jobim. But then again... not really. I recently read Jobim's biography, written by his sister Helena Jobim, called 'Antonio Carlos Jobim: An Enlightened Man'. I really identified myself with it. Like me, Tom Jobim was a Carioca. Of course he was older, my dad's generation. In their teenage years, Ipanema was still a wild beach. And yet, I identify with a lot of the places he hang out, the classical music he loved, such as Debussy, his love for nature, Brazilian nature, expressed in his beautiful songs. And, the voice of Elis Regina, who made several of his songs, hits!

I intend to stay connected more often. I have a new website! Also facebook - please like my music there!-, twitter, youtube. Check that stuff out, download free music, and support independent musicians! Here are the links where you can buy my new CD 'The 12', released on March 12th 2011, and/ or individual tracks! Plus a free download! In Austin TX, buy at Waterloo Records, on 6th and Lamar.

Graças a Deus!

(Houston TX havido sido a minha primeira residência nos US).

E a comida mexicaca e Tex/Mex.

<![CDATA[My New Home]]>Tue, 27 Sep 2011 16:57:51 -0800http://yellowhouserecords.com/1/post/2011/09/my-new-home.htmlIts almost October. And it's still hot in Austin. But I ain't complaining! Finally we got some rain today. Love that smell. Wet earth. Every morning I take a walk by Lady Bird Lake. I love doing that. It sets the mood for the day.
Last Friday I played a show at Guero's. I luv that venue. Have seen so many shows there. I was a guest of Bob Fuentes & Los Flames. Great musicians!! Including Steve Doerr and Grady Pinkerton from The LeRoi Brothers!
I love the sense of community that I get here in Austin. People are very friendly, and the musicians are really supportive of each other. It's like a big music family. I'm glad I took part in the 'Musicians for Musicians Benefit', for those who lost their homes during the raging wild fires here in Central Texas 2 weeks ago.
New home means new band! I'm looking forward to playing my music with my friends here in Austin. There are so many great musicians!
Have been doing a lot of soul searching lately. A lot of writing, in general. Yes. It includes new songs. Good or bad. As the masters say, keep writing, no matter what. Sometimes I wish I didn't 'have' to write. But it keeps calling my name....
